Located in the heart of Ibiza, Can Ventosa is a large building dating from 1925 with modern architecture. This place has a rich history due to the many functions it has held over the last century. It was first built to house a textile and fabric manufacturing company specialising in the creation of socks, which provided work for many of the island's women. As a result, it was of real economic interest to the relatively poor society of Ibiza at that time, and the products manufactured were exported to
Spain and especially to Barcelona. The sock factory thus functioned until 1956 before the building was bought by the Ministry of Defence for its management and stewardship. A few years later, Can Ventosa was used as a warehouse and repair shop.
Finally, after a succession of very different activities, the building became the property of the municipality of Ibiza, which saw in it a unique opportunity to transform it into a cultural place, a place of exchange and gathering of the population. In fact, culture has always held an important place in Ibiza, which has seen many movements on the island, such as the
hippies. At the same time, Ibiza has many museums and
art galleries that can be visited throughout the year.
Thus, in 1995 Can Ventosa was officially inaugurated as a cultural centre. With a large number of rooms and an amphitheatre, it is the ideal place to host performances of all kinds. The municipal library is also housed in the building, whose period style has been perfectly preserved. Today, more than 140,000 members find their happiness in one of the largest libraries in Ibiza.
Can Ventosa hosts numerous workshops, artists, plays, dance, singing and cinema throughout the year thanks to a rich programme. If you want to immerse yourself in the culture of the island, learn more about its
history or enjoy your holiday to discover new things and local artists, you will love this place!
