At Villanovo, we have set out to conquer these unmissable sites to give you some ideas for cultural visits. Today we present you with the Ibiza Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria or the Cathedral of the Virgen de las Nieves. A true architectural jewel, this religious building was built in the 14th century, when work began after the conquest of the Catalan troops and was completed in the 16th century. The cathedral, which was erected on top of the old mosque, has an exceptional location, which makes it an unmissable site. Indeed, beyond its beauty, the cathedral is located at the top of Dalt Villa and its fortified city. This location allows all visitors to enjoy a breathtaking view of the ocean ... and especially on the port of Ibiza and its nearby beaches such as Playa d'en Bossa. The upper town of Dalt Villa is also known for its famous acropolis classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So plan a day to visit all of the city's historic sites.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria is a monument particularly appreciated for the diversity of its architectural style. Indeed, the latter is composed of a sumptuous mixture of styles from the different eras it has lived through. You will see Gothic parts while other parts of the cathedral were built in a Baroque style. Its tower, for example, is Gothic and its nave, composed of 14 separate chapels, is the work of Baroque art. The majority of the cathedral still belongs to the Baroque style as a large part of the building was renovated at that time. This splendid parish, unique in Ibiza, was only recognized as a cathedral in 1782. Its other name, Cathedral of the Virgen de las Nieves, comes from the fact that the cathedral is dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows, known as the patron saint of Ibiza according to the Catholic religion.
