Ibiza and environmental protection

Ibiza is a natural paradise in the heart of the Balearic Islands. Holidaymakers like to recharge their batteries, discover the landscapes, celebrate, explore the country's treasures, etc. and every year, several thousands of visitors travel to the island.

However, the island is in danger because of the pollution that increases each year and endangers the island's fauna, flora and landscapes. Unfortunately, tourism is partly responsible for this.

Discover how, through simple actions, one can protect the natural heritage of this charming island.

The coast of Ibiza has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, but critics say that the census is not enough to protect the site. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the seabed is over polluted.

This pollution is due, in particular, to boats or yachts, which drop anchor anywhere, without worrying about coral reefs, or tourists who throw their waste into the sea. As a result, the biodiversity of the seabed is endangered.

To address these problems, the island's administration has launched a study on its social and environmental capacity and has put in place various indicators for future decision-making.

Some of the island's typical plants have been replanted to restore biodiversity and encourage the consumption of local products. For example, almond plants have been replanted on the island.

The island has also launched a communication campaign to encourage the responsible consumption of water, energy and plastic. The main objective is to raise awareness among local populations and tourists of their impact on their scale.

In addition, a fundraising campaign was launched to raise more than €1,100,000, which was used to save the island.

And you? What can you do about it?

And you? What can you do about it?

At Villanovo, we believe that every gesture counts, even the smallest ones, in everyday life. Here is a list of some tips or activities to do during your holiday, to guide you towards a more eco-responsible approach.

You can use ecological sunscreen, which does not damage the seabed and its flora. Indeed, most creams leave particles in the water, often harmful to fish or corals in the vicinity. Normally, a label on the bottle indicates whether the cream is environmentally compatible or not.

In addition, be careful with the natural areas when you carry out your activities on the island. Whether hiking or diving, remember to pick up your garbage, do not pick up wild flowers or walk on them and, more broadly, follow the itinerary indicated or recommended by the guide.

You can also choose to travel to the island by boat rather than by plane. This mode of transport is less polluting, and allows you to admire the island and its landscapes from a different angle, and the fauna and flora more closely.

I mean, why not participate in a clean walk on the beach? Organized regularly, these meetings aim to walk along the beach, and pick up all the garbage on the way. It is a fun activity, which can be done with children and raises their awareness of the environment.

Thus, the island of Ibiza is facing some difficulties in safeguarding its environment. The island is making every effort to safeguard its magnificent natural heritage and continue to welcome admirers of its beauty every year.
