A little history

A little history

During the hippie movement in Ibiza, the European “Beat Generation” saw the island as the place where a whole generation can reinvent itself, going against the grain of Western civilization. Riding on this revolutionary wave, an avant-garde collective was born: the “Grupo Ibiza 59”. It brings together French, Scandinavian, American, Belgian, English and Spanish designers around German painters who quickly gain influence. A few names have remained: Bechtold, Brener, Ruiz, among others.

It was then that Ibiza began to forge an international artistic reputation with notable galleries: El Corsario, Ivan Spence or Carl Van Der Voort. A remarkable artistic fund will also be used to supply the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art that we know today. At the same time as this movement launched by travelers, the native artists of the island are launching the “Grupo Puget” in the service of an indigenous painting which brings together artists very different from each other. Among them, Narcís Puget i Viñas will stand out in particular as a figurehead (like Vicente Ferrer Guasch), mainly interested in painting everyday scenes on the island. You can admire his works in the excellent museum named after him in Dalt Vila (Eivissa)

What is the Ruta del Arte?

What is the Ruta del Arte?

Ibiza has always been a source of inspiration but also a refuge for artists, whether for the beauty of its landscapes, its pleasant climate throughout the year, or for but also the tranquility that reigns there. Over the years many people find the island a true haven of peace and Ibiza has hosted several movements including the famous hippies who have helped spread their peaceful way of life and art on the island.

Thanks to this rich cultural heritage, Ibiza today has a great diversity of art forms and many artists among its population. A trip to Ibiza is an opportunity to rediscover art from a different point of view and in relation to the history of the island. In recent years, many art galleries and museums have been founded to make art accessible to everyone, young and old. Among these cultural experiences, the Ruta del Arte is unique in its kind.

La Ruta del Arte was created thanks to the movement of the artists’ association, Art Club Ibiza, whose mission is to encourage an exchange between the locals or tourists on the island with the artists. Recently, the association published a magazine, available both in stands and in a digital version, which allows artists to present themselves and give their contact details to readers wishing to meet them. In this way, the ‘Ruta del Arte’ allows you to discover the work of more than 80 Ibizian artists, visit their workshops, discuss with them, and closely follow the stages of their artistic creation. La Ruta del Arte is also an unmissable event that takes place every year in June at the Ibiza Congress Center and gives rise to a major exhibition. At the same time, as part of this program, you will also find the Noches del Arte on certain evenings of the summer period in the villages of Ibiza.

Finally, if you are more into music and urban art, the Luna llena de Arte art feria is held 4 times in the village of Santa Gertrudis from 7 p.m. to midnight between June and October. As its name suggests, it is held on certain full moon nights in the church square, where several concerts, but also acts of dancing and music are performed. An original way to immerse yourself in the art of the island!
