Atlantis, Ibiza's secret treasure

In Greek mythology, Atlantis refers to the lost island, whom location is unknown. Some even say Atlantis is an underwater city. This myth has inspired literature, fiction, novels and many theories and conspiracies.

In Ibiza, Atlantis refers to a place where you can see the remains of the island's history underwater – hence the name of the place. In reality, the place is called Sa Pedrera: it’s a cove, located on the Cala d'Hort nature reserve, in the southwest part of the island.

On the site, the rocks have strange shapes, since it is actually an old quarryI, mainly used in the 16th century to build Dalt Villa, the old town, its ramparts and the castle of Ibiza. These sites are now classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Throughout history, the site has been carved by different artists, in the shape of dragons, Buddha heads or peace signs. Some even say that the site looks like a shipwreck.
Additionally, the carved rock has created holes below sea level, which erosion continues to carve, creating natural pools. It’s the ideal place for a swim due to its distance from crowded beaches.
In the 1960s, the hippies arrived on the site and turned it into a meeting place for spiritual parties. They are the ones who carved Buddha's head and peace signs.

How to get there?

How to get there?

Accessing the beach is difficult, you have to be brave and wear good shoes.
By car, take the Es Cubells road towards Cala d'Hort. Before the beach, turn left onto a dirt track. There is an esplanade where you can park.
Then you have to continue by foot. Take the sea path that seems most practicable to you. Be careful, the path is not marked so don't get lost! Bring good shoes as the path is winding and mainly consists of climbing rocks. You will need between 30 minutes to an 1 hour to get there. It is a 3.5 kilometers walk.
You can also access the site with a boat if you have rented one for the day.

After enjoying Atlantis, take a detour to Torre des Savinar, also called “the pirates’ tower”. It was built in the 18th century to provide a view of the neighbour islands Es Vedrá and Es Vedranell. It was probably also aimed at keeping an eye on the arrival of pirates, who came to loot the island.
From the tower, admire the sunset over the sea.

Be careful, these places are still unknown to tourists and are mainly visited by locals. Be respectful when you go there: pick up your garbage and pay attention to the local fauna and flora.
