An unmissable cultural discovery

An unmissable cultural discovery

Ibiza has many surprises in store for you, especially from the point of view of its cultural richness, which tends to be underestimated by tourists before they arrive on the island. Indeed one appreciates the island for the kindness of its inhabitants and their taste for sharing their culture, but also for the magnificent monuments of the island including its lot of religious buildings, which give an impression of greatness in Ibiza. You may already be familiar with the island's traditional dance, the Ball Pagès, which is a very popular dance in Ibiza, especially among the elderly.

The Caramelles de Nadal are Christmas carols, which also take place for Easter and are called Caramelles de Pasqua. It is a real tradition whose carols have their origins several decades ago. For more than 50 years, these songs have been performed by a group of three men who have been singing about episodes of Jesus, especially when he was persecuted and found refuge. The whole is sung in old Catalan and accompanied by musical instruments such as the flute, the castagnols or a metal sword-shaped instrument that follows the sound of the drum. The songs are usually composed of 3 parts and last about 20 minutes after the priest's speech. The Caramelles represent a tradition transmitted orally from generation to generation and were classified as an element of cultural interest in 2005 as these songs are still performed and appreciated every year.

If you decide to set down your luggage on the island shortly before Christmas or to spend Easter there with your loved ones, you might be lucky enough to attend one of these performances if you go to church. The Caramelles de Nadal and Pasqua usually take place in the town of Santa Gertrudis, Sa Colla des Puig de Missa, or in Colla de l'Hortega de Jesus.
